Slovak National Scholarship Programme – for International Students, PhD Students, University Teachers and Researchers
The programme is financed by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Youth of the Slovak Republic from the state budget.
Who can apply?
- International students – must be master’s students at a higher education institution outside Slovakia. Applicants must have completed at least 2.5 years of university studies.
- PhD students – conducting scientific or academic work outside Slovakia and accepted at a Slovak institution for a PhD programme.
- University teachers and researchers – invited to Slovakia for research or teaching activities.
Duration of the programme
- Students: 1–2 semesters or 1–3 trimesters
- PhD students: 1–10 months
- Teachers and researchers: 1–10 months

Note: PhD programme duration counts as work experience (up to 6 years).
The scholarship is intended to cover living costs in Slovakia (food, accommodation, transport, etc.).
Non-EU/EEA/Switzerland citizens staying in Slovakia for more than 90 days must obtain a temporary residence permit and a medical certificate (maximum cost 250 €).
Additional travel grant
Students and PhD students may receive a travel allowance depending on distance:
- up to 200 km – 0 €
- 200–300 km – 50 €
- 300–500 km – 100 €
- 500–1 000 km – 250 €
- 1 000–2 000 km – 350 €
- 2 000–3 000 km – 500 €
- 3 000–5 000 km – 750 €

Note: Applicants requiring a visa should consider time for document preparation, visa application, and temporary residence permit issuance.
Application procedure
Applications are submitted online at www.scholarships.sk.
- The online system opens at least 6 weeks before the deadline.
- Applications can only be submitted if all fields are completed and all attachments uploaded.
Required documents (students)
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Motivation letter
- Detailed study programme (including host institution, list of courses, credits, start date)
- 2 recommendation letters from university teachers (with signature and contact details)
- Official confirmation from home institution of student status
Submission of documents
- Original acceptance letter must be sent to SAIA, n. o., Sasinkova 10, 812 20 Bratislava.
- Host institution may send the letter on behalf of the applicant, but a scanned copy must be attached to the online application.
